What is a sensory trail?

What is a Sensory Trail and how can be beneficial for your dog?

For dogs the process of searching for something is more stimulating than finding or getting a reward.

Sensory Trails can be made up of different objects that would be interesting for the dog to explore. I possible, it is best to target all the senses : smell, vision, taste, hearing , touch and proprioception.

Using all their senses, dogs make sense of their own bodies and the world around them. You can not separate the senses from the emotions they trigger.

You can use something simple, such as water with different flavours, or something more elaborate like low obstacles, objects that make gentle sounds, different surfaces to walk on and items that manage to engage all the senses.

Allowing your dog to explore at their own pace would provide a lot of sensory and mental stimulation and increase your dog's self-confidence.

It will also allow for further development of all those senses because they are being used!

You simply set up a trail of objects and follow your dog as she explores it - on a Smiling Leash, of course!
