Why are we always in such a hurry?
Sometimes it takes just a few minutes for dogs to relax in a new environment if we allow them to investigate it first.
Once dogs are able to check the new area around them and locate where the smells and the sounds are coming from, they are able to be at ease with the new surroundings.
If you go to a new place with your dogs, check the area with them first.
Walk around the perimeter together and check it out. Give your dog time to investigate every corner and every item. If they spend extra time on any minute thing, allow it. If they decide not to approach something, respect their wishes.
It might seem time consuming and you might wonder how it is going to help. It certainly will! Once your dog knows what is there it will be much easier for her to calm down and accept the new area as safe.
Many dogs are insecure about going into new places. It makes them nervous. This shouldn't surprise us, it happens to us too. If you just give your dog those few extra moments to get used to this new place, she might just surprise you.
Make the round, walking along the perimeter with your dog.
Make sure your leash is smiling.
Wait for your dog to finish with each area or item before moving on.
If she needs extra time, wait for her.
Do not coax your dog to approach items - this should be her choice.
